(December 10, 2020) — A new solar energy system is expected to provide both economic and environmental benefits at AGCO’s facility in Assumption, Illinois, generating approximately 20% of its power requirements.

Located on an 8-acre site adjacent to the plant, which manufactures GSI grain storage and conditioning equipment, the solar project was designed and constructed by SolAmerica Energy. It is a ground-mounted system that rotates to track the sun throughout the day, maximizing electricity production.

The power generated — targeted at 3.2 million kilowatt hours for the first year — is expected to produce substantial savings compared to the facility’s current energy costs. Besides the economic benefit, the project also offers an environmentally friendly source of clean, renewable energy.

“We’re very proud to support the adoption of solar energy on this large-scale basis, which will contribute to the global effort to help protect our climate,” said Hans Lehmann, Vice President, Americas, AGCO Grain & Protein. “This project also supports AGCO’s ongoing commitment to provide sustainable, high-tech solutions for farmers feeding the world.”

“SolAmerica has been honored to work with AGCO on this exciting project,” stated John Buffington, Vice President of Business Development for SolAmerica. “AGCO approached SolAmerica with a view that going solar could add value to their GSI business while supporting the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability in a tangible way. We applaud AGCO for this vision.”

Buffington said an added benefit of the project is that the site area has been planted with wildflowers and native grasses intended to provide habitat to pollinating species, which offer critical ecological and agricultural benefits.

The AGCO solar energy system was developed under the Illinois Shines initiative, a state incentive program designed to promote the development of new solar energy sources in Illinois. For additional information about GSI, visit grainsystems.com.

The official project launch event took place at the AGCO Future Farm Zambia on Thursday, November 5, 2020, with 50 stakeholders in attendance from across the Zambia poultry and agricultural industry, government officials, journalists, farmer cooperatives, poultry associations and community leaders, including representatives of the Chongwe District’s Royal Highness Senior Chieftainess Nkomeshya Mukamambo II.

The poultry industry in Zambia is mostly dominated by small-scale farmers who depend on poultry as a social safety net, especially vulnerable households. Given the growing demand for poultry protein and global commitment towards improvement of animal welfare, it is pivotal to develop tailored projects and initiatives that address key issues and provide sustainable solutions to hunger and nutrition among marginalized farming communities.

“We understand the urgent need to support small-scale farmers in Zambia so that together we can improve production and address existing food and nutrition insecurities. Our foundation is thrilled to partner with Self Help Africa to implement a sustainable approach to enhance the knowledge, skills and practices of smallholders. Empowering the producers to improve their livestock management operations for economic and nutritional benefits will also highlight animal welfare practices for better treatment of farm animals across the value chain,” says Metti Richenhagen, Managing Director, AGCO Agriculture Foundation.

The AGCO Agriculture Foundation’s funding is geared towards increasing the productivity, skills, nutrition and income of 100 poultry farmers in the Chongwe district of Zambia and 50 female poultry farmers from the identified women’s groups.

“Supporting small-scale farmers to end hunger and poverty in rural Africa remains our key focus, and we are excited to work with the AGCO Agriculture Foundation to strengthen this zero hunger commitment. With the prevalence of hunger and nutrition insecurity in the targeted Chongwe district, which has been further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, we are optimistic about the timely intervention the project will bring towards sustainable poultry production,” says Elia Manda, Zambia Country Director, Self Help Africa.

The project will be implemented in conjunction with the AGCO Future Farm in Zambia to provide training support for the project beneficiaries.

“Our agricultural training facility will play a key role to facilitate knowledge and skills transfer for farmers on best livestock management practices required to boost productivity and income. We will work with our Grain & Protein business unit to support selected farmers on improved animal welfare and livestock management operations,” adds Kalongo Chitengi, Senior Manager, AGCO Future Farm.

Starting the uMsinga sustainable farming project
uMsinga Local Municipality is a small rural area with a high rate of poverty and unemployment due to few resources and low economic activity. In 2016, a district survey revealed that only 9.7% of the population was employed. Bahle Zondo, who is originally from the region, returned from Johannesburg to set up this sustainable farming project to address ongoing food insecurity, unemployment, and poor rural infrastructure.

The project is currently on 100 hectares of communal land, with 60 hectares under cultivation. The land is mainly dryland. With funding from the AAF, the uMsinga Farming Project has drilled a borehole for irrigation, allowing the community to grow sugar beans on 50 hectares and white maize on 10 hectares.

“The agronomic advisory services received from the AGCO Africa team has also contributed to our production capacity of 2.5 tons per hectare for sugar beans and 7 tons per hectare for white maize,” Bahle Zondo says happily.
These crops helped the family farmers and community meet their food needs and have a sustainable source of income. Some of the crops were donated to households to cushion the impact of COVID-19 on food security and livelihoods in uMsinga. The rest were sold, and the revenue was used to buy seeds, fertilizers and other inputs for the second phase of the farming project, says Zondo.

Enabling food access and prosperity for rural people
With the help of AAF, the uMsinga farming project has directly employed 20 men and 53 women, making it the biggest employer in the community. The project has also helped up to 600 people indirectly.
“At harvest, we employ even more people from the community. Our project has helped the area to have an improved livelihood and change of lifestyle, as many of our family farmers opened their first-ever bank account because of this project,” Zondo says.

Operations

DULUTH, GA, September 11, 2020 – AGCO (NYSE: AGCO), a global leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of agricultural machinery and solutions, announced an agreement to acquire research and product development firm 151 Research to create new technology solutions for grain customers.

AGCO and 151 Research previously had an exclusive technology partnership to develop GSI GrainViz precision grain monitoring, which gives growers and commercial operators advanced insight into the moisture content of the grain in their steel storage bins. This acquisition will allow AGCO to continue development of GrainViz and expand into new solutions.

“Our grain customers are facing significant challenges due to difficulty finding labor, low commodity prices and tight margins. We need the sharpest minds working on finding answers to these challenges, and we believe this acquisition will help improve our customers’ operations through smarter technology,” said Stefan Caspari, AGCO Senior Vice President, General Manager, Grain and Protein. “We are excited about the continued development of GrainViz and look forward to creating a connected experience across the entire grain system to increase efficiency and profitability for our customers.”

“Our team’s goal at 151 Research has always been to solve problems by helping customers gain actionable insights to improve their business," said Paul Card, Chief Executive Officer, 151 Research. “GrainViz allows users to see the moisture content throughout the entire grain mass to proactively manage the quality and quantity of their stored grain. We are pleased AGCO recognized the benefits this game-changing technology can bring to customers and shares our passion for finding smarter answers to the industry’s biggest challenges.”

AGCO intends to retain the firm’s 45 current employees and to maintain the Winnipeg office as the smart grain technology center of excellence. The team is completing an initial release of GrainViz in a limited number of bins this fall. A broader launch is planned prior to the 2021 harvest.
